The Artist

Steve is a native New Yorker  who moved to Oregon in the
early 70's to attend Oregon State University.  He has lived
in the Portland area with his wife,
Janet, for thirty years raising
two children and working in the automotive parts business.

In 2003, looking to find and develop an artistic outlet, Steve registered for two workshops at his local
Community Recreation Center.  One was a beginning guitar class and the other a beginning watercolor
workshop.  Both the guitar and art in general had been  interests since childhood.  It was early into the second
semester of both workshops that it became clear to him that, of the two, painting was coming way more
naturally to him.  Practicing the 6-string seemed like work.  It was tedious and improvement was questionable.
Watercolor painting on the other hand was like a vacation.  It broke time and was both satisfying and
challenging.  Painting and improving his technical and creative abilities had become a passion.

Steve enjoys realism but wants to include elements of impressionism in his paintings.  He appreciates the
importance of strong drawing skills and is concentrating on improving his.  His goal is to eventually be able to
draw with the paint brush.

Since those initial workshops Steve has continued to spend as much time as possible painting and self-
instructing in his home studio.  He has also taken a number of workshops with artists such as Judy Morris,
Arne Westermann, Eric Wiegardt and Mary Whyte.

Steve has been a member of the Watercolor Society of Oregon since 2005.  He is also an associate
member of the NorthWest Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society and American Watercolor
Society as well as the Oregon Society of Artists.
